Instead of helping any of the actual people he simply ended up aiding a dictator. He has only left home to have fun and "play the white-man with the natives." His over the top attitude makes it easy for the viewer to have a high level of disconnect and forget for a moment that the events of film more or less happened. It's easy to look at Whitaker's Amin and be engaged in a similar way to other iconic villain characters like The Joker. Forrest Whitaker's performance of such a man was definitely the draw of this movie and the film not only knows this but plays on it. A man of similar vein to modern day dictators such as Gaddaffi or the Kims. Noted for his paranoia and alleged cannibalism.
